Who put the "Con" into "Consumer Advice"?

I’ve noticed a couple of comments and have had a few emails from people wondering what’s happened to this blog – has it gone away? Well no of course it’s not. It won’t go away until Koptalk does. I’ve just been a bit busy the last few days. And I also had an aversion to anything to do with Liverpool after what happened on Sunday. I don’t read the papers or watch the news after a defeat, so I couldn’t really be bothered to do much more than glance at Koptalk and save a few bits and pieces.

I did add another edit to our very own podcast – including some remarks from Oldham about just how crap those feeds are that he advertises for thirty quid. You can subscribe to our podcast using whatever means you normally use for these things, but http://feeds.feedburner.com/koptalk has a “play now” option. There are a couple of ads on there too, but they pay the bill for the service so I’m not complaining. They don’t have to be listened to, they don’t pop up, they don’t tell you that you’ve won a prize for being the 1000th visitor. (A rumour that Oldham pulled the free site because those ads kept saying “Congrats, you are our 21st visitor today” are probably untrue.)

He launched a section I won’t look at for now – I seriously do worry what I might find in there – “KopKids For young Reds. Every post requires approval”. It really doesn’t need me to comment on just how inappropriate that section is on the KopTalk of 2006.

In fact there’s very little to talk about really, but I found this from the beginning of last week. I’ll not bother commenting on it too much, I’ll let you do that this time. It starts off with one of the so-called “Insiders”, Johnny H, talking about urinating on the floor at Dixons. Then you can sit back and enjoy some consumer advice from quite possibly the fattest rip-off merchant in England, along with some of his paranoid ramblings. There’s also a good few appearances from a familiar username, but I won’t mention it. Oh and it is quite long, so it should make up for those missing days from the blog…

Xbox 360 tale….
#1640310 – Mon Sep 11 2006 10:54 PM
So there I was, browsing round Woolworths when I saw the Xbox 360 display.
Now I was slightly interested in getting one, at some point before Christmas. I’ve got 5 young sons you see, and although they’ve got the original xbox with tonnes of games, I knew the eldest wanted the latest thing.
So I was looking, half interested.

They had the core system with a game (Tomb Raider) for £199.99. But I didn’t really want the core system – I wanted the premium system. Then I spotted something.
On the display, on a woolworths printed card, was the following;
“Xbox 360 Premium system and Tomb Raider: Legends game. £179.99”
Surely they meant £279.99.
Indeed, on the xbox display package, the sticker said £279.99.
I called the trouble and strife over to look. She said forget it, they wouldn’t sell it to me for £180. It was a mistake. I agreed and went with her back to the car with our stuff.
Then I decided what the hell? I was going to at least ask someone, a manager, what the score was. Maybe they’d have to sell it to me for that price. I wasn’t 100% sure about the trading laws.

I went back into Woolies and found a bloke that looked like a manager. “Are you the manager?” I asked. “Assistant.” he replied. “You’ll do.” I said.
I took him over to the display and pointed out the error and asked if he would sell one to me for that price, as a gesture of goodwill, and then I’d walk away while he put things right.
He said the price listed was only an invitation to buy. He actually didn’t have to sell it to me at all. I sensed he wasn’t being entirely truthful and said I wasn’t sure about that. He said he’d go speak to the manager. And off he went. I then realised he’d taken the incriminating card with the wrong price on and thought he wouldn’t even come back and that I’d be standing there for until the shop shut.
But no, he came back. He said, seeing as how I’d brought it to their attention, that as a gesture of goodwill he’d be willing to meet me halfway and let me have £50 off the £279.99 – making it £229.99.
I came over all British and decided I didn’t want to cause any more of a scene so I accepted.
He put it through the till for me and I walked away with a Premium system, plus Tomb Raider for £229.99

Question is – could I have pushed him for the full £100 off or was I given a good deal that I should have been grateful for? I can’t help thinking I should have pressed for more.

You could always push for more but then you have to be realistic mate and ask if you’re happy with the deal you’ve got? I feel many places would have just got rid of you with a take it or leave it attitude.

The price listed on the display is known as an invitiation to treat………….i think (and its been a long looooooong time since i studied this) but the principle is that you are offering to buy the goods at the price stated, and the vendor can basically accept or decline your offer.

Somebody will now come on and prove me to be a complete tit

Dunk, this is just a question.
Why do you think so many of the biggest posters off the site have all went and got themselves banned, realistically. Most of these people were the most layal members, the ones that were best known, even moderators. would just like to know your opinion as to why this has happened especially with the old timers, and seemingly not so much the newer members.

I think what happens is you expire someone to have a word with them. They then say “I’ve been banned” which isn’t actually the case. They choose to stick to such a line which isn’t true. Friends then say “shove it because you’ve banned x”. It then spirals and spirals. People stick their nose in, you ask them to mind their own while we try to contact the original person but they ignore you. The friend then kicks off so you say “I’m sick of this bollox”. Then another friend chips in and throw in a few chinese whispers and you have anarchy.

You can understand friends standing by each other. I’ve seen it many times before but all we ever ask is leave the majority of the members who don’t care about politics to be left to crack on with their own business. If people ignore polite requests and/or appear to want to cause problems, we don’t want to know.

If anyone here really believes that we for no reason cull people for the sake of it then they need their heads testing.

People have friends and there’s nothing wrong with that. But what you guys don’t see is the abusive emails we receive from “some” people when we try to ask them to calm down. You’ll only hear what these people want you to hear.

All we want to do is crack on with the people who want to be here. Those who come out with one liners or who think it’s funny to drag up someone elses name when they know where they are is pathetic.

I don’t think we’ve banned many people in all the years we’ve been here.

I can assure you if someone comes to myself in a polite and mature manner then I respond to them but I have no time for idiots, troublemakers or people who tell half a story.

Based on what you’ve no doubt been told you would be banned now for asking? Have you been? No. Why? Because you’re asking a genuine question and you don’t appear to be taking the Michael.

The same happened on the main site forums years ago. It happens. People become friends and they can become a bit powerful without knowing. You understand that because they’re friends but newcomers then feel put off contributing because they get one answered replies and sarky remarks. If you do what we do and monitor just about everything you see it happening.

Why we would ever want to upset anyone for the fun of it, knowing that they’ll be out there putting their version out. Every single time someone leaves we know someone will be celebrating and saying how bad we are. Sadly some people just act like kids but it’s no big deal because if people don’t like it here, nobody makes them come here

It’s an easy solution but few can just leave like adults. They have to earn their badge to be accepted elsewhere.

I’m happy to talk about this by email anytime you wish via editor@koptalk.com (Steve will forward to me) but the forums are not here for people to have to endure stuff that they don’t really care for.

One last thing. I know more than I let on. People should just leave people to talk about LFC. You won’t see us discussing others. Only a site full of kids would do such.

(Not spellchecked or checked for grammar. No doubt it will be all over the web in 5 minutes)

I reckon (and this is a guess) that it’s about 10 ‘big’ posters who’ve been locked out/banned/whatever you want to call it, and probably the same again (if not more) of nobodies trying to earn internet cool points.

A few more have left by their own accord

All those ‘big’ posters are friends with each other (by which I mean that they at the very least talk to each other on the internads a fair bit, if they don’t know each other socially), got piszed off because their mate left and basically got themselves banned stupidly IMO.

Having said all that, perhaps in hindsight a quiet word or two would be a better response that locking people out – I know as a vaguely mature (!) adult it would pisz me off to get locked out. It’s like being sent to the corner of the room at school

I can honestly say that only one person surprised me especially as they made efforts to get close to me. I thought this person was a friend. To suddenly vanish was bizarre but they’re friend left so fair dos.

God I don’t care if people have other sites, I’d help promote them if they wanted it such help it’s just when people do the underhand stuff. People often say we won’t allow links but sometimes people don’t know the background. We often speak about RAWK and so on. It’s just not as simple as some people think sometimes.

We would only ever expire someone if they were repeatedly doing something stupid. We do email people but sometimes they have free email accounts so the emails must be treated as spam. Sometimes they have changed emails. If you expire them they usually get in touch. If expired, you are NOT banned as you can still log in. It just asks you to contact us.

Even people who have been banned over the years have been let back in. For anyone to suggest we’d just single someone out and get rid for no reason is stupid. Why in the hell would someone do that? It never happened before so why all of a sudden now? There’s a simple answer. A friend leaves and they have to earn brownie points by sticking up for them. I guess I’d probably do the same thing for a mate of mine. But once gone, why dedicate your time to spouting rubbish?

If someone says to me “Dunk Im sorry”, I would say “Don’t apologise silly sod”. It’s just community first, drama second. If someone has a problem come to me or contact us direct. Why spout off on the forums and create a drama? If someone like Steve or Katie hasn’t done something they were supposed to then let me know and I will see it’s dealt with.

Of course mistakes can happen but there’s always a return, there’s always a way out. If I’m wrong I apologise. I can honestly say that I miss a lot of the former crew but hey, such is life right, new members come in daily and we want a happy family.

The only thing I have no time for is people who come out with sly digs and so on like at school. If people don’t want to be here, if we’ve failed then move on. Drop me an email or call us first and we’ll do what we can to make you happy but sometimes you just can’t provide what that person wants but it doesn’t mean that they have to leave under a bad cloud.

Treat others like they treat you.

They only get expired if they don’t contact us after we try or if they do something really stupid. Expire is just a term we use for that group in our database. It basically means “please contact us”.

What makes it worse sometimes is free members have created and it’s kind of insulting when they’re here as guests

As for you and me, apparently I’m everyone these days. Is this true? You’ve been linked as me? Christ and I’ve been watching you too.

We don’t want a drama which is why I prefer not to comment on nonsense.

We’re only concerned with what happens here, not on other websites. We won’t slate others and I won’t allow the palce to be a playfield for members to slate others. That’s how you separate the kids from the grown ups.

Fair enough mate.

If you suspect e-mails don’t seem to be going through, why don’t you PM them to say ‘stop f*cking around or I’ll have to lock you out’?

Oh, and I agree lots of people (including myself until recently) spend far too much time talking about Koptalk – whether for or against – instead of football. *

LOL, fair play Dunk, you said basically what I thought. (no wonder some jokers think we’re the same person)

I don’t think you should ‘expire’ people though. Even when acting like idiots I think people who’ve been contributing to the site for years deserve some leeway

LOLOL – yes, a few people (including one or two who must know me from Koptalk) have seriously thought I was you

That’s cool.

The PM system is disabled. We can’t PM anyone. If you post a FAO on the forums people then start getting all excited and nosey.

Trust me, it works every day of the week with sane people. They simply call us and say “Hi I’ve been locked out, what can I pay, get me back in!!” and then we say “Don’t be daft, we’re just checking we’ve got your right details etc”. You see and read all the negative stuff but the majority of our time is with people who love the site.

Steve has to take the mobile everywhere just incase he’s needed. Of course we make mistakes and might miss a ticket or call but that doesn’t mean there’s a conspiracy.

What makes me laugh is when people say you’re banned if you disagree with me. That’s so funny because I try to make people disagree with me, that’s my job sometimes. If I have a row with someone on here then I like to think it’s just because we’re two passionate reds. There’s never a need to be bitter about anything and I never hold a grudge. But if I know someone is trying it on, I don’t want to know. Life is too short.

Really? Why’s that mate? I get that from time to time. Then when you hear someone talking about websites and people taking cheap shots, doesn’t it just make you want to kick off or walk away? It does me. Life’s precious. I think about my dad every day and wish he was still here. Only his memory keeps me going sometimes.

On the display, on a woolworths printed card, was the following;

Basically the law states that the shop does not have to sell you the xbox at all, what you should have done was purchased one without saying a word and if they charged you more than was advertised then they were breaching the law.

Once the sale was complete complain like mad and guaranteed the shop would have given you the difference back – some retailers even promise to refund all your cash and let you keep the product if you are overcharged by even 1 pence.

So basically if you see this situation again just keep quiet and buy it, retailers will do almost anything to keep trading standards away because they can be complete gits.

What they always do after a complaint is make a test purchase without the shops knowledge.

Problem is, I think, if one person get’s locked out and can’t be arsed to call then their mates are going to do the same.

Shame you couldn’t get access to PMs yourself because it would save a lot of stress.

Here’s an idea – why don’t you have a secret forum which only people who are locked out can see? That way you can talk to them in a private forum without it being public and you can judge if they’re just having a tantrum or not. Another site seems to do this effectively

PS Fair play to you for discussing it
PPS So did you have ‘potentially Rupert’ scribbled in your notes on me

well ive told you what i think about [oops] taking cheap shots and people are gonna do what theyre gonna do but at least have the balls to be upfront about it. i dont get the [oops] talking. but besides that, just the doom and gloom of 9/11 has had me thinking all day how much i miss my ma and what a horrible [oops] cancer is. at least i saw my mas death coming unlike the 2400 people that died or were murdered by those shower of shithouses and add to that all the people dying in iraq how the [oops] could anyone possibly feel about today

Ha Ha. No notes on you (yet)!

Yes the PM’s would be good I will suggest this to the forum peeps. Secret forums takes too much time that we don’t have. We’re on MSN and phone every day from early until late. We also have the support tickets.

Sometimes I think people are happy to be caught up in a drama. For me, I don’t have time for games. Instead of squabbling about a problem British style trying to find blame, do it the Japanese way, solve it there and then and move on.

Life’s too short mate… and that’s why I’m going to bed. It’s all yours Smoove

Fair enough, hopefully you can get the PM idea sorted IF anyone else kicks off . (although LOL at ‘support tickets’ )

Sh!t, it’s 12.40

Goodnight…

Over to you then for some comments on that, if it needs any. One thing I will say – let’s stuff the Geordies tonight. (Of course I’m referring to the Reds beating Oldham’s team Newcastle, not the readers of the blog stuffing the subject of the blog).

I only managed about half of that before I started vomiting. Violently. He really is the most melodramatic cockmunch. Whats with this handover shit with schmoove? Embarrassing.

  2. 1488 Says:

when he says you guys are acting like kids (or implies it anyways, i assumed?) i would have agreed with him, if it wasnt the fact that he is ripping decent honest liverpool fans off hence the reason you guys are doing this in the first place.

there is a difference between leaving a free site with bad feelings and spreading bad words about it (ie acting like a child), and trying to get a conmans operations shut down for ripping off anyone he can!

if you know it will be posted up on here oldham, why not spare us your rhetoric next time?

  3. est-er Says:

He always goes on about people behaving as if they were in school. Is this another one of his freakish fetishes along with sleeping with 12 year olds?
One of the main reasons for people leaving Koptalk was Dunk’s treatment of Tom’s reasonable 10 point plan to improve Koptalk. Banned/Expired immediately. Who’s acting like a schoolchild there?
He’s one of the biggest hypocrites I’ve ever come across. The sooner LFC close him down, the better for everyone including revo and Disco1999

  4. Giles Says:

FLMAO @ ‘let’s do it the Japanese Way’. I assume he means a backward feudal society with him as Sun King

  5. Cosmo Says:

Xboxes! They used to talk mainly about football. How mind-numbingly dull and redundant thay’ve become. And funny how people having ‘friends’ qualifies them as part of some dodgy clique. Oldham seems to prefer to preside over forums of strangers, or enemies, with a meek little mod or two willing to crack the whip whenever solidarity threatens to break out in the ranks. He’s like Stalin minus the whimsical charm.

  6. Disco Says:

LOL, thought you guys had missed this thread 😉

I’m disco1999 if you hadn’t guessed. It’s interesting to hear his views on the banning/blocking thing. As you can see I think he’s gone about it the wrong way, but I have some sympathy (with Dunk’s view) that some people have seen their mates get banned/locked out and basically acted a bit OTT and got themselves banned/locked out.

Hopefully he’ll take these views on board. To be fair, he seems to be receptive and responsive to people asking him pertinent questions in a mature manner – may be he’s changed recently?

Anyway, well played at finding this – surprised you didn’t spend more time commenting on it 😉

  7. rupertinsider Says:

    You still arseing about?

  8. rupertinsider Says:

You sound like that PR guy for Saddam Hussein “receptive and responsive to people asking him pertinent questions in a mature manner” .

  9. Disco Says:

    LOL.

I’ve no idea why I posted all that. I must have missed you.
