Were Koptalk ahead of the rest with the Pennant story?

A look back at how Duncan Oldham kept his paying customers informed of events surrounding the signing today by Liverpool of Jermaine Pennant. Others have already pointed out he was behind other LFC sites with the advance news of different stages of interest in Pennant. This article covers how he took everything off the net, tv or radio today and reported it as if he’d got sources of his own.

First thing this morning comes this well-written update from the highly professional Koptalk.com. They’ve won awards you know. Seriously (they used to get people to click as often as possible on voting links in the days before internet software was improved to stop multiple voting efforts.)

Double signing due at Anfield
#1570400 – Wed Jul 26 2006 08:48 AM
Liverpool may have flown out to Switzerland yesterday but it’s business as usual on the transfer front.

Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant should be in the bag before the weekend, he’s set to undergo a medical today ahead of a £6million deal.

Sevilla are still messing us around with Daniel Alves and once Pennant’s signed the money is unlikely to be there for him.

That leaves Dirk Kuyt as a strong possibility with Insider sources reporting that a fresh bid was made for him within the last few days.

Where did “Insider sources” say that then Dunk? Anywhere on any of your sites? You have no sources (except mass media).

At approximately 10.00 this morning (can anyone confirm the actual time?) PA were reporting that Pennant was at Anfield for his medical. I wasn’t near the TV today, so I can’t confirm this, but I expect it was also on Sky Sports News around that time.

So, “According to a source” most certainly means “According to Sky/PA”.

Pennant at Melwood – Agent at Anfield

According to a source at Melwood, Pennant has arrived at Melwood with one of Sky Andrew’s assistants. Sky (the agent, not the company!) is at Anfield.

I can’t confirm if this is true or not.

“I can’t confirm if this is true or not.” No, we know you can’t confirm it Duncan, because YOU HAVE NO SOURCES INSIDE ANFIELD, MELWOOD or THE ACADEMY.

Something I don’t think I’ve ever listened to is Talk Sport (for my own reasons), so I don’t know what format their day takes. I don’t know if they have breaking news interrupting other programmes or a rolling news service – but even they had reported it before Oldham from the way this rare poster mentioned it. This post came four minutes after Duncan Oldham had mentioned it, and I doubt Dunk heard it before any media mentioned it. So if Dunk didn’t get it from PA or Sky, he got it from Talksport.

Is this the first snippet from your “gateman” Dunk or as you’ve said you “can’t confirm it” are you referring to someone else @ Melwood?

Meanwhile, back at Koptalk HQ, Dunk realises he’s been rumbled. AGAIN. “Quick Steve, what can I say, what can I say?” He remembers one of his old chestnuts…

I haven’t listened to TalkSPORT for a few days now. Is Brazil back in the studio? I don’t like it when he’s not on. He must have been on the last again the last time I put it on.
– – – – – – – –

See – he’s so quick to deny he got it off Talksport he’s got his words all words all words messed up.

Anyway, he’s got the gateman question to answer now. “Look Steve, they’ve fallen for the gateman story. This is where you put your mysterious voice on. Watch me and learn. Dunk Knaars Best Tha Knaars.” Steve wonders why Dunk says, “voice” when he’s not even doing the podcast yet.

I can’t say who it’s from.

Unless I have seen something for myself, I won’t confirm anything. I prefer to pass on what’s said and let people make their own minds up.

Even though the media are reporting it, even though my source is confirming it, I still never believe anything myself unless I see it

So at least he owns up to it being splashed across every single piece of live media available then. “I can’t say who it’s from” – go on Dunk, we don’t mind PA, Talksport or Sky? We could have had a mini-sweep on it.

I think Brum are going to mess us about like very other club does! They will accept £6m then say actually no – we want £7m, then £8m etc etc! I would like Pennant to sign for us though i must admit as i think he is a very talented player who has a great right foot and is very quick!

I would also love us to sign Klose rather than Kuyt – is that a possibility do you thik Dunk?

Don’t worry whitters, Dunk will soon be changed out of his Katie gear and back into his “wallet” gear to tell you all about Newcastle’s latest target. At about 4.30pm I believe. (He’s locked out now you see.)

Your ‘gateman’ should have provided you with an update if he’s at Melwood.

Sack him.

Dunk thinks, “Who the hell was that guy I gave 100 notes to at Melwood? He assured me his brother worked the gate at Melwood. He’s still not called me back.” Meanwhile, in came the earlier PA report, kindly provided by “scouser_ncc”.

HERE YOU GO GUYS….

Pennant ‘having Melwood medical’
Jermaine Pennant is reportedly having a medical at Liverpool on Wednesday morning with a view to completing a £6.2million move from Birmingham.

The former England Under-21 winger was believed to have travelled to Merseyside on Tuesday night for talks, and is expected to fly out to Switzerland later on Wednesday if the medical and contract details are completed.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has taken his squad to their usual training camp, and 23-year-old Pennant is likely to join them once the details of his move have been completed.

His debut could come in Saturday’s friendly against Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein.

Liverpool are also likely to confirm Scott Carson as their second-choice goalkeeper after new contract talks.

Carson was part of England’s World Cup squad in Germany, having spent much of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, who have been trying to extend that deal this summer.

Portsmouth have also been trying to sign Carson on a season-long loan, but with the prospect of Jerzy Dudek being used in a possible transfer exchange shortly, the opportunity is now there for Carson to assume the role as Jose Reina’s understudy.

Carson joined Liverpool from Leeds for £750,000 in January 2005, and it is believed that an improved five-year contract has been agreed.

(There’s the bits about Carson getting a new deal and other snippets used by “wallet” later on. Six hours later on.)

Dunk loves to be vague. It gives him plenty of escape routes. Unlike his lousy portacabin which has only one door. This is far too vague though. Who’s offered this player a three-year contract Duncan? His own club or the one you pretend to support? (By the way, this was another example of Duncan Oldham’s attempts at misleading News Now visitors. The headline he provided for News Now was “Striker offered 3-year deal – reports” – no name, to entice people to click).

Hristodoulopoulos offered 3-year deal – reports
#1570930 – Wed Jul 26 2006 11:46 AM
19-year-old Greek striker Lazarus Hristodoulopoulos has been offered a 3-year contract according to reports originating from Greece today.

The PAOK forward was first scouted last season and favourable reports were handed over to Reds boss Rafael Benitez.

See how Dunk pretends to know all about Liverpool’s scouting network? He even has a (currently empty) folder on his insider site devoted to scouting reports. WE KNOW HE’S NOT GOT ANYTHING OR ANYONE ANYWHERE NEAR THE LFC SCOUTING NETWORK.

Anyway, lunchtime comes and goes, and a relieved Duncan finds the Liverpool Echo have updated their website. Remember – “Credible sources on Merseyside” = “Liverpool Echo website”. He doesn’t actually have access to the printed edition, so he relies on the website – and the website doesn’t have all the juicy stuff on, to keep it out of the greasy hands of the likes of Duncan. (Some of you will know which specific “bits” of the Echo I am referring to, “bits” that aren’t there every day.)

Rafa Benitez was probably waiting for Dunk to give him the go-ahead to switch his attentions from Alves to Kuyt – Dunk tells us, “Like us, the boss is sick of Sevilla faffing around.” Yes Duncan. And another claim about his “insider sources” – Eurosport?

Liverpool end interest in Alves but step-up Kuyt chase
#1571135 – Wed Jul 26 2006 01:13 PM
Credible sources on Merseyside are reporting that the club have ended their interest in Sevilla’s Daniel Alves now that Jermaine Pennant is close to completing his switch from Birmingham City.

Liverpool boss Rafael benitez has decided to use what money he has left to sign the 23-year-old winger instead and who can blame him. Like us, the boss is sick of Sevilla faffing around.

Although our interest in Alves would now appear to be dead, our interest in Dirk Kuyt is very much alive.

Insider sources reported earlier this week that the club had tabled a new offer for the Feyenoord hitman and it would appear that negotiations are still ongoing. A decision on that front is expected before the weekend.

We expected a busy week and finally we’re starting to see some real progress.
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

Duncan expects busy weeks every week during the summer, in the hope that if he says it enough he’ll get lots of hits. Something tells me that’s not been happening this summer. We’ve still had no reply from David Rawcliffe, of Propaganda. He’s the guy Duncan Oldham claims is the “Koptalk Photographer”. Maybe Dunk was in contact with him today, maybe not. A couple of you posted this in the comments today – I wasn’t around so I missed all the fun. (Is this the point where I pretend I was busy all day because I was carrying out a medical? Oh no, that’s the job of a Dunk alias of course.)

You left Dunk’s original “story” in the comments at about 1pm.

“Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant has completed his medical at Anfield and could be paraded at a brief press conference this afternoon if everything goes as planned.

Arrangements have been pencilled in to present him to the media but the player could instead fly out to Switzerland and be officially paraded at a later date.

Much depends on the availability of Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

Whatever happens today, providing he passes his medical, he will join the rest of his new team-mates in Switzerland in time to make his debut against Kaiserslautern at the weekend.”

Glad to hear such certainty Duncan.

Later on, after finally admitting to himself he’d been stood up (I bet he’d been sat next to his phone all day too, no time to disappear into the smallest room in the house to read his copy of The Sun) Duncan finally admitted defeat.

Liverpool pencil in medical – UPDATED
#1571310 – Wed Jul 26 2006 02:24 PM  Due to time limitations it has been decided that a press conference to parade Jermaine Pennant to the media – providing he completes his proposed transfer to Liverpool from Birmingham City – will not take place today.

He’s made up he’s found the “strikethrough” feature in his forum software. Pity he can’t find the “delete” key on his keyboard to take the rumours from The Sun out of the BBC rumours page he rips off for his site.

Anyway, the official site finally make an announcement, and Dunk puts it on his site. He’s still showing his obsession with Rick Parry too – the man he’s never met or even spoken to (despite previous claims). I doubt he even knows how to get in touch with Mr Parry.

Liverpool complete Pennant signing – OFFICIAL
#1571701 – Wed Jul 26 2006 05:04

Liverpool Football Club have completed the signing of Jermaine Pennant from Birmingham City in a deal that could reportedly cost us up to £7.5million.

The 23-year-old winger has passed his medical and signed the 4-year contract offered to him by Reds chief executive Rick Parry.

Pennant – who has been allocated squad number 16 – is now on his way to Switzerland to team-up with his new Liverpool team-mates.

Biggest day in weeks and Duncan was behind everyone else as usual with the reports. Why? BECAUSE HE HAS NO SOURCES WITHIN THE CLUB.

Before I end this post, someone said we shouldn’t be posting Duncan’s “insider” stories on here, but that’s one of the main reasons we’re here. And anyway, look what Dunk says on his advert for the Gold club –

“Seen a teaser on Teletext? They want you to call £1-a-min premium rate number? Let us know and we’ll found out what it’s about!”

This is all very strange & a friend I know knows Ian Cotton – I’m going to ask them to ask & then I might feel more comfortable with this blog.

Depending upon when this happens (although he does seem to like his ale!) I will let you know…

  2. rupertinsider Says:

This is an edited version of my earlier post on another thread re: DAVID MADDOCK

A couple of weeks ago, Oldham was claiming that David Maddock of the Mirror was a member of his Gold Club and as recently as yesterday claiming that he picks up snippets of information from journalists from the national press.

I said it was not true and I wrote to David and informed him about Oldham’s slander.

If any proof was needed Oldham just gave it.

David Maddock scooped all other journalists with the Pennant signing- by a whole day. Yet there was not a peep of it in the Gold Club – just some incoherent ramblings from the unpaid informer johnny_h about LFC and Birmingham squabbling over the proper value of Pongolle who was to be part of an exchange deal involving Pennant.

Of course, Maddock would have had to give his scoop to the Mirror first, but don’t you think it would have been in his interest, to tip off Fatty shortly after so that Fatty could be first among the LFC sites and to prove his links Maddox and “respected journalists”?

Maddox would have benefitted by having KT readership pointed to the Mirror.

It never happened because Maddock is not a member of his GC and Oldham does nto get any snippets from respected journalsits.

Oldham hadn’t got a clue about when and if and what terms the Pennant deal was going through.

He would have been better off just linking to the Mirror instead as soon as the story broke instead of putting on another Punch and Judy show in his Gold Club.

No wonder he locked himself out for three days.

That is a great point Rupert.

Also may I add for the upteenth time that Elisha_Scott of YNWA was first in with the Pennant news…making Fatty and his legion of aliases even worse off…

  5. R A Softlad Says:

Actually UofC it was Kev/Snorky on YNWA. We ran the story on June 30th but we’d had contact as far back as April 05.

  6. Insider Insider Says:

I’d also like to add to what RA Softlad ( 😀 ) says about the breaking of the story.

YNWA (correct me if I’m wrong) will not run a story as a STORY (as opposed to a forum post) until they are as sure as they can be that something will come off.

In the forums, on YNWA, you’ll see many snippets and hints of inside info, but if you weren’t a regular reader you might not know which members you should be listening too.

So YNWA, like Koptalk Insider, has members who post snippets of inside information (given in good faith) on the forums. Koptalk Insider’s members who have snippets of info are slowly but surely leaving the site. Koptalk Insider’s owner has no inside information to share, he has no sources or contacts inside the club.

YNWA sometimes make snippets of inside information into stories for the non-forum part of the site. BUT NOT UNTIL THEY ARE DAMN SURE THAT IT’S TRUE! They have a policy of if in doubt, leave it out. (Again, correct me if I’m wrong).

They don’t charge a bean for this information or these stories. They will gladly accept donations for the running costs of the site, in return you get to put an avatar alongside your forum posts. And you also get the satisfaction of supporting a site run by and run for Liverpool supporters.

YNWA is just one example of an LFC website that is better for the soul than Koptalk. Better for your reputation than Koptalk if you want to tell your friends bits of transfer gossip. Better for Liverpool FC than the site that supports the Sun.

You get to it at http://www.ynwa.tv (any other variations on the domain may take you to one of the ones squatted by Mr Oldham).

  7. chapeau du soleil Says:

yeah, I think ynwa wait till they get confirmation from 2 unrelated sources

  8. fat_boy_fat Says:

Surely this must be the straw that breaks the camels back for the undecided.
He (oldham) was not even a few minutes ahead of ANY news source during the whole pennant transfer. PLUS the icing on the cake is that HE (oldham) has shown to everyone that he DOES lie about things. All his times do not add up to prove insider info.

So we pay £30 for someone to listen to talksport, while having one eye on SSN and the other flicking through the pages of the sun. Easy work that if you can get it.

P.S what makes me shudder is the fact that if this Blog was not here, we wouldnt be aware of it. Most people work during the day so dont realise how and were the story breaks during the day, so when sign on the KT when they get home and see that Pennant has signed and see a few posts from Oldham saying its going through, then people naturally assume he was ‘on the ball with it’.

  9. Mudface Says:

Just to reiterate YNWA.tv’s scoop on this, here’s the forum link (you’ll need to register to read this particular forum)- http://www.ynwa.tv/forum/index.php?showtopic=107854

The news article is here- http://www.ynwa.tv/news/index.php/2006/June/2158

They jumped the gun slightly, I suppose, after the attempt to sign Alves dragged on a while, but were spot on otherwise. Also, to emphasise other points made in these comments- ElishaScott’s posts on YNWA are accurate and well worth reading. He does genuinely appear to have inside knowledge due to his apparent friendship with a prominent player.

I’ve never visited KopTalk and would never dream of parting with £30 as it’s so clear that it’s just a recycling site and has no real inside knowledge whatsoever (I also prefer swearing at other people and dissing n00bs on theroadend…). Just a quick glance at NewsNow every so often shows how they simply repackage snippets of info from other sites and press releases, they’re always slightly behind what others are saying. I’m just amazed that people get taken in by this sort of obvious rip-off and hope this excellent blog sees off this parasite once and for all.

  10. rupert Says:

I concede that YNWA was the first of the LFC sites to be so certain that it would be done, but I think David Maddock was the journalist who had the scoop of saying the deal was done and naming the price as 6 million and that he would be going to Switzerland. On the morning the Mirror printed that (and he had written it the night before) the BBC and many others were saying it was not done and some were saying that Birmingham has refused an offer. NewsNow (where Oldham seems to have some sort of hold) was still quoting Koptalk’s headline that Birmingham had denied that there was a deal.

  11. R A Softlad Says:

Insider Insider and chapeau du soleil are correct in that we only run a story if it’s confirmed by two or more independent sources.

  12. rupert Says:

We should log Oldham’s twists on turns on this story – investment in the stadium.

According to Bascombe LFC say they have access to the funds
    link
We all read a couple of weeks ago Oldham’s statement that he believes that LFC does not have the funds. Then a few days later that they will have to make a decision about the stadium even if they do or do not have the funds – doh! Then his radio and pod statements a few days ago – also reflected in his written opinions – that “it is doing me “ed in all this investment, I don’t want to hear about it!”.

Nobody would blame his frustration if he as genuine, but we have had years of him claiming to have insider information about it and to be a virtul adjunct to the L4 group and Kenny Dalglish and having inside information about the Kraft family interests after they allegedly broke off from the L4 group.

We’ve heard his witterings about the Redrow Homes guy many times , implying that he understood his mind and as recently as a few days ago that he was angling to be part of whichever group was leading the investment.

Then there were all his trailers about major news in May, put off to July, and now his belief that the group might not want to tell them – but he won’t call them, even though he could, because he does not want to make himself a nuisance. And throughout it all he has kept his breathless readers aware what was in the mind of Rick Parry (whom he has never met or spokent to) and David Moores and other directors.

He’s also used the story to pursue his vendetta against the club for all his imagined hurts at being rejected by it. He wants the investment to result in the sacking of Moores and Parry – oh no he doesn’t – he would just love Moores to stay if someone would put up the money – but he fears (crocodile tears) that he and Parry will have to go.

Its laughable in one way, but how many people has he convinced to sign up for the Insider and the Gold Club by this blatant con?

  13. univofchicago Says:

“and now his belief that the group might not want to tell them – but he won’t call them, even though he could, because he does not want to make himself a nuisance”

hahahahaha. I thought that was the funniest part of it all. One excuse after another but that one tops it all. hahahahaha.
